FROST Privacy Policy
FROST is a document-based personal finance application for macOS. It is designed to keep financial records under the user’s control and does not require a FROST account.
Data FROST stores
FROST stores the information a user enters or imports in a local .frost document. Depending on use, this may include account names and balances, transactions, categories, income, bills, subscriptions, budgets, reconciliations, debt details, investment holdings and trades, planning assumptions, preferences, and audit history.
Document-specific preferences are stored locally. If the user enables optional market quotes, the user-provided Alpha Vantage API key is stored in the macOS Keychain.
Where data is stored
FROST financial documents are stored at locations selected by the user. FROST does not provide a cloud account, bank connection, or automatic cloud synchronization service. A user may choose a location managed by another provider, such as iCloud Drive, or share, export, or back up a document using macOS; those choices are governed by that provider’s terms and privacy practices.
FROST backups are user-selected files. They are checksummed for integrity but are not encrypted by FROST. Users should protect sensitive documents and backups with macOS account security and FileVault, and avoid unsupported network or shared-storage locations for active documents.
Data transmitted by FROST
FROST does not send the contents of a financial document to Digital Elephants LLC. It does not include advertising, cross-app tracking, developer analytics, or a third-party crash-reporting service.
Market-price lookup is optional. If a user configures Alpha Vantage and requests a quote, FROST sends the requested ticker symbol and the user’s Alpha Vantage API key to Alpha Vantage over HTTPS so Alpha Vantage can return a quote. The request uses an ephemeral network session. Financial account records, transaction histories, and the .frost document are not transmitted as part of that request. Alpha Vantage processes the request under its own privacy policy and terms.
Imports, exports, backups, and printing
FROST reads a transaction file only when the user selects it for import. FROST writes an export, report, backup, or restored document only to a location the user selects or authorizes through macOS. Printing is initiated by the user and handled by the macOS printing system.
Diagnostics and logs
FROST uses local macOS logging for application diagnostics. Sensitive values are redacted or summarized where supported. A diagnostic package is created only when the user chooses to create one. Users should review diagnostic material before sharing it with support.
Data retention and deletion
Financial data remains in the user’s local document until the user edits or deletes it. FROST uses confirmations and history protections for sensitive financial operations. To remove a FROST document or backup completely, close FROST and delete the corresponding file in Finder, then empty the Trash if desired. FROST has no remote account or server-side financial record for the user to delete.
Children
FROST is a general-purpose personal finance tool and is not directed to children.
Security
FROST uses App Sandbox protections, user-selected file access, macOS Keychain storage for the optional quote-service credential, and HTTPS for optional quote requests. No security method can guarantee absolute protection. Users remain responsible for protecting access to their Mac and for choosing secure storage locations.
Changes to this policy
Digital Elephants LLC may update this policy when FROST’s data practices or legal obligations change. The effective date will be updated when a revised policy is published.
